The Sens give me a case of the snappies!

Hockey's been on for a month, and I haven't mentioned it once. For shame.

There are two constants with the Senators so far this season:
- When they win, they win big.
- If a game is close, they will lose.

Ok, maybe you could argue that it's really one constant. But really, it's as if there's two different teams and victory depends on which one comes out to play.

Early in the season (about 4/5 games in), they were the LOWEST scoring team in the NHL. This is incredible, since last year they were the highest scoring team and have been near the top for the last few years. They then proceeded to win the next 3 games by scoring an average of 7 goals. (That's a lot, for those that don't follow hockey.) Everyone thought the Sens had finally woken up and everything was going to be ok. Yeah... nope. They've gone on to lose their last 4 games.

Last night's game is a perfect example of how their season has been. They come out flying, taking advantage of a shaky goaltender and get a 3-0 lead only 12 minutes into the game. Super. But then Washington scores 1 goal in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd and 1 more with the goalie pulled with 20 seconds left. Oh, and of course Ottawa couldn't score a goal since their 1st period blitz. So now, we have a "close game" and true to nature Ottawa loses the game in overtime (dammit, dammit, dammit!).

The real kicker here is that Washington's 3 goals were scored on the powerplay*, which is what Ottawa has been struggling with all year. How stuggling? They have the worst powerplay in league, which is again a complete reversal of fortune from last year.

Something's gotta to give, this team can't go on losing. The rumour mill regarding trades has been going the last 2 weeks. Don't be surprised if you see some drastic moves very soon. No one is safe, and honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see Spezza or Alfie gone by December. This is why I'll never get a Sens player jersey.. anything can happen in hockey!

* - Ok, one of the goals was scored just as the powerplay expired, but still.

The other reason not to get a jersey with somebody's name on it - it's really gay. Ok, if you're a girl it's fine, but if you're a guy? Gay, gay, gay.

I'm proud of my Alfie jersey!!!

But I do agree with everything else you wrote in your entry Henly. It's been a complete switcharoo of their playing this year. Here's hoping that they are just having a slow start and will show their true colours when it really matters...the playoffs...
