There's a new UFC Welterweight champion...

and he's Canadian, folks.

A few of you remember that I'm into UFC (remember the infamous discussion regarding the naked choke hold? It's not gay!!). On Saturday I was over at Rob and Crystal's to watch the UFC 65 PPV. The main event: "The most dominant Welterweight Champion in UFC history", Matt Hughes vs. Georges St. Pierre (GSP) from Montreal.

How dominant has Matt Hughes been? He won the title originally in Nov 2001. Since that date, he went 11-1, losing the title in January 2004 to B.J. Penn but regaining it later that year in October, when Penn vacated the title, by defeating a much less experienced GSP. Notable in that span are victories against Royce Gracie (the legend in the sport) and B.J. Penn in a rematch just 2 months ago. He's also known for being a bit of an ass.

I've been able to catch many of GSP's fights. Besides being Canadian, he is an all-round fighter, excellent at striking, grappling and submissions. He also comes across as very smart and personable in interviews. How could you not cheer for the guy? He's wanted another shot at the title ever since he lost in 2004. After a couple of delays, he finally got his shot Saturday.

The fight was completely one-sided with GSP ending it in the 2nd round with a left kick to the side of the head that brought Hughes down. The ref stepped in to end the fight and I jumped out of my seat. They showed the 20 or so members of the Canadian contingent in person in Sacramento jumping up and down. After the in-ring interviews, GSP brought his mom into the ring, got her up on his shoulders and gave her the belt. Nice touch.

The other big news coming out of the fight was the announcement of a potential rematch: in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Folks, that place is going to be bananas. I think I need to go... who's with me??

Rear naked choke hold? Gay.

The most DOMINANT? Dude. Who's the most submissive?

These poor fellas need to come to terms with their sexuality. (and their steroid use, from what I've seen). There's nothing wrong with being gay, but seriously, come on out of the closet.

Enjoy your trip to the homo bar/aka UFC event :)
