Yes, I should have trained more going into this thing.
Yes, I should have had my bike tuned up.
Yes, I should have had coffee instead of Powerade on my bike.
Yes, I should have worn pants.
But, I completed the 70* km tour. :)
I didn't know what quite to expect since they altered the course from last year. The good part was that the 3 - 5 km stretch that used to be on a dirt road is gone. The downside was that the new route is a little more hilly, featuring a MONSTER hill at the 25km mark. (Remarked one biker: "Oh my god, look at that!!" But I never had to stop on a hill or walk my bike up, like many around me did. Yes, my legs are on fire, thank you.
Luckily the sun cooperated and I didn't have a repeat of the Tour Mud fiasco from last year. (There's a picture around of me covered in mud.) However it was a bit of a shock when I saw the temperature was -2 when I woke up. It gradually got warmer but there some parts when biking into the wind was causing icicles on my nipples.
So I've done Tour Nortel for the past 6 or 7 years now, and every year you pass folks that have had breakdowns or crashes. I've always said "That will be me one year." This was the year. At about 23km, I hit something on the road (I went back to look to see what it was but couldn't find it). It almost knocked me completely over so I'm thinking it was a loose piece of ashphalt or a small child. Once I recovered, I listened for the sound every cyclist dreads... waited ... waited... oh, there it is: "ssssssssss". I was flat in seconds. Dumped my bike on the side of the road, tossed my helmet in disgust. Here I was, not even halfway through and I was done. I got some nice condolesences from the people that had passed me, including a woman who looked 70 that I had been chatting with (I'm always chatting up the ladies, yo). I stood there for a while as people came up asking what was up and offering to help (not much they could do, that tube was BUSTED.) The Tour Nortel Distress Pickup (my name) drove up however, and the guy gave me a quick ride to the next reststop. By some miracle, Tommy and Lefevbre (Ottawa sports store) had a tent there, WITH SPARES TUBES! They hooked me up and I was back on the road! So yeah, a big thanks to T & L, if anyone is there in the next little while, be sure to mention how awesome it was for them to sponsor Tour Nortel.
No problems from there on out. I had left Nortel at 8:35AM and got back at 11:55 AM. Figure I lost 20 minutes with my flat, so my total time was about 3 hours, which is as good as I could expect for myself for my first 70 km (and my first time on my bike since the 30km last year).
So my total money raised was $635. Thx to all of you who sponsored me.. I hope I made you proud. Next year I'll drag a few of you with me! :p
* - ok, so it was more like 68 kms because of my truck ride. You're not getting your money back.
