Jadisms

It's been a fun couple of days with Jade........

--------

Poppo (Grandad): "Who's the sweetest girl around?"
Jade: "Grandma!"

----------------------------------------

Jade (finding my Extra Strong Halls): "Is this a candy?"
Me: "No, it's a cough drop."
Jade: "Can I have it?"
Me: "I don't think you'd like it honey!"
Jade: "Yes, I will!"
Me: "Ok then!"
(Jade pops it in)
Me: "What do you think?"
Jade: "Oh, it's good!"
(One minute later)
Jade: "My tongue is burning, Daddy."

----------------------------------------

Poppo: "If your feet smell, and your nose runs, you must be upside down!"
Jade: "If my feet run, and my nose smells, I must be right side up again!"

----------------------------------------

Me: "Jade, you are such a cranky girl today!"
Grandma: "Is it because you were up so late last night, Jade?"
Jade: "Yeah"
Me: "Mom, of course she's going to use that as an excuse, she'll use anything as an excuse, watch. (To Jade) Jade, are you cranky because the aliens took you up to their ship and put the cranky chip in your head?"
Jade: "Yeah"

----------------------------------------

Grandma: "When did you learn Spanish, Jade?"
Jade: "Wednesday"
Grandma: "Wednesday? Where were you on Wednesday?"
Me: "Mom, she's obsessed with Wednesday right now for some strange reason. (To Jade) Jade, when were you born?"
Jade: "Wednesday"

-----------------------------------------

Jade: "Don't be such an alien, Daddy."

What you THINK is the flu.. .may not BE the flu...

A coworker of mine, a guy that works on the same project as me, left work last Friday a couple of hours early, complaining about chills. Not so unusual, tis the season.

On Monday, he was still not back at work. Still, not that surprising.. probably a bad flu.

On Tuesday, he came in but only lasted a half day complaining of aches and a fever.

On Wednesday, he IM'd me saying that he was still feeling awful. He couldn't keep his hands and feet warm and couldn't keep anything down. Also, his shin hurt.

His shin hurt?

I questioned this right away as it's not a typical 'flu' thing. He explained how his lower leg had been hurting for a day or so and that today it seemed to have moved up. I expresed concern that this was not normal. He said he'd already planned to go to a clinic.

On Thursday morning, our boss emailed the whole team explaining that he was admitted to the hospital and had emergency surgery to deal with an aggressive bacterial infection in his leg. It was so bad they had to remove part of his calf muscle. The best guess going around is that it's a variation of the so called 'flesh-eating disease'.

Today, his leg is still open and being drained. They've got him on stronger drugs than morphine right now.

I'm not writing this to freak everyone out the next time they think they have the flu. Just be aware of ALL your symptoms. If there's someone happening that doesn't usually happen when you're sick, get it checked out. These types of things are rare, but they have to happen to somebody. If he'd gone any further without getting help, he might have lost his leg.

I'm thinking of you, buddy.

Clay Aiken, Kelly Ripa and Rosie O'Donnell are in a rowboat..

Here's an interesting little story.

The one who has no gender, Clay Aiken, guest hosted the Regis and Kelly show last Friday. I don't usually watch it, but apparently Kelly has a habit of being a big talker during the interviews and not giving Regis a chance to ask anything. So Clay and Kelly are interviewing Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke from Dancing with the Stars when Clay notices he cannot get a word in edgewise. Clay tried to turn it into a joke and put his hand over Kelly's mouth. Right away, you can tell this pissed her off and she directly but politely told him it was wrong.

Here's the clip, but it doesn't happen till about 2:40 if you want to jump to that mark:

Why Clay was wrong: Dude, that's gross. If you're friends, maybe you can get away with it. But in a professional setting (on LIVE TV, nonetheless) with someone you haven't worked with before, it's a very unsanitary, inappropriate and juvenille thing to do.

When Regis was back this week, she brought the incident up again and tore into Clay a little bit more:

Why Kelly was wrong: Why bring it up again? You dealt with it immediately and properly. The guy was clearly embarassed and put in his place as he should have been. Bringing it up the following week and laying into Clay again doesn't help anything, you made your point the first time. Why try to damage him further?

Oh, and then on The View, of course Rosie has to give her two cents. She calls it a homophobic remark, which outrages Kelly so much she calls into the show and defends herself and calls Rosie out on, well, being an ass:

Why Rosie was wrong: Where do I start? A homophobic remark? A HOMOPHOBIC REMARK? (Did Rosie just "out" Clay Aiken? I don't remember him coming out officially, but that's not really the point.) "You don't know where that hand has been" is used ALL THE FREAKING TIME! Does Rosie really think Kelly was implying he was giving handjobs backstage or something? He's been shaking hands with the freaking audience and it's flu season. If someone did that to me at work, I'd sure be tempted to say the exact thing to them! This is an example of Rosie trying to be a champion of the gay community, which is not a bad thing, she's done a lot of good. But not every insult or put-down directed to a gay person is because they are gay! Pick your fights carefully Rosie, or you'll lose more credibility.

Damn, this is funny

I don't know anything about Veggie Tales, I stumbled upon it by accident. But this video is hilarious. Me and Jade just finished watching it. We were both cracking up. That fact that the topic is pirates is simply a happy coincidence!

"Why even bring it up?" Golden!

Storytime!

Well, I'm starting to dry up on current events material and life stuff in general has been rather slow, so for today here's a favourite family story from years ago:

As I might have mentioned in the past, I once had casts on both my feet at the same time. I guess I was about 4 or 5. I have this isolated memory of sitting on the floor in the old family room, the plaster still a bit wet. I couldn't really go anywhere, so I was plopped in front of the TV watching old black and white reruns of Dr. Who (it's not that I'm that old, my brother had borrowed tapes or something). Anyway, that's not the story.

While I had them on, I tried to keep up and do the "family things". One thing we usually did was take nature walks in the Old Quarry Trail (across from the Hazeldean Mall). On this particular occasion, I had trouble keeping up because
  1. I had short legs (everyone else was 12+)
  2. I had two bloody casts on my feet!

So every once in a while, the family would have to stop to wait for poor, poor Scott to catch up. Enter my Dad, who sometimes cannot let the opportunity for a good joke pass him by, regardless of the circumstances. During one of the "Scott stops", he noticed a family coming the other way. Timing it perfectly as the family passed by, he turned to face me and shouted convincingly in his "angry voice":

"Hurry up, or I'll break your arms too!"

Apparently, the look on the faces of that family was priceless. My brother Brad, who was always a little sensitive, whispered: "Dad, shhh... I think they heard you!!" The rest of us were trying to stop from laughing, just to keep the gag up. Well, except me. I was too focused on catching up without falling down. :p

Can you imagine if someone made that joke today? We would have been visited by child services for sure! :)

There's a new UFC Welterweight champion...

and he's Canadian, folks.

A few of you remember that I'm into UFC (remember the infamous discussion regarding the naked choke hold? It's not gay!!). On Saturday I was over at Rob and Crystal's to watch the UFC 65 PPV. The main event: "The most dominant Welterweight Champion in UFC history", Matt Hughes vs. Georges St. Pierre (GSP) from Montreal.

How dominant has Matt Hughes been? He won the title originally in Nov 2001. Since that date, he went 11-1, losing the title in January 2004 to B.J. Penn but regaining it later that year in October, when Penn vacated the title, by defeating a much less experienced GSP. Notable in that span are victories against Royce Gracie (the legend in the sport) and B.J. Penn in a rematch just 2 months ago. He's also known for being a bit of an ass.

I've been able to catch many of GSP's fights. Besides being Canadian, he is an all-round fighter, excellent at striking, grappling and submissions. He also comes across as very smart and personable in interviews. How could you not cheer for the guy? He's wanted another shot at the title ever since he lost in 2004. After a couple of delays, he finally got his shot Saturday.

The fight was completely one-sided with GSP ending it in the 2nd round with a left kick to the side of the head that brought Hughes down. The ref stepped in to end the fight and I jumped out of my seat. They showed the 20 or so members of the Canadian contingent in person in Sacramento jumping up and down. After the in-ring interviews, GSP brought his mom into the ring, got her up on his shoulders and gave her the belt. Nice touch.

The other big news coming out of the fight was the announcement of a potential rematch: in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Folks, that place is going to be bananas. I think I need to go... who's with me??

Go Wonderpets!!

For a few weeks you've probably seen phrases like "This calls for some celery" or "This is sewious!" as my IM status.

These come from the most enjoyable kids' show I've seen in a long time, The Wonderpets. The show utilizes photo-puppetry animation, which means it uses actual photos of animals for the characters. The premise is 3 baby animals, a guinea pig, a duck and a turtle (but really, the duck steals the show) that live in a school. Once the kids are gone, the three get into their superhero outfits and go out in their flyboat to save other baby animals. The real kicker is that every episode is fully orchestrated and most of the dialogue is sung! The show has enough humour to make it interesting for parents to watch along with their kids.

Here's the episode where the save the puppy who has to pee:

What? Oh crap, it's been taken down from YouTube! Dammit!

Oh well, here's the Wikipedia entry on the show instead.. that sux.

If you want to catch an episode, it's on Treehouse on Weekdays around 5pm.
